“Making art and being a contributing human being are not separate endeavors.”

— Eric T. Kunsman

In 2017, Eric set out to photograph every payphone left in Monroe County, New York: all 1,455 of them. He mapped each one against census data on race, class, and income, to show who still depended on them. Felicific Calculus: Technology as a Social Marker of Race, Class, and Economics in Rochester, NY is a project where he photographed over 800 of the 1,455 remaining phones.

The project went national as Life-Lines Throughout the United States, from Muir Woods to Danbury, New Hampshire. When Frontier Communications disconnected the last of Rochester’s payphones in 2024, the photographs became a plan: the GoodPhone Project, which turns old payphone housings into free phones and Wi-Fi for the neighborhoods that lost them.

That is the story CBS Sunday Morning News is telling. Every print in this shop helps write the next chapter.
